How to Find the Right Bus Spare Part: Model, Year, Number

Almost every problem with a spare parts order comes from the same source: the part was described incompletely. The make is given, the year is not; “I need a headlamp” is said, but not whether it is the left or the right one. The result is a part travelling out and back, and two days lost. Yet four pieces of information are enough — and all four are written on the vehicle.

Four pieces of information are enough

What a parts supplier needs in order to give you the right part is a short list:

  • Make and model — not “Travego” but, if possible, “Travego 15 SHD”. Not “Setra” but “S 416 HDH”.
  • Build year — the same model carries different parts across the years. This is the most frequently omitted and most expensive omission on the list.
  • Left or right — which side counts as “right” is explained below.
  • The number on the part, or a photograph — where the first three are uncertain, this alone is often enough.

Where the type code is written

A commercial name and a type code are two different things. “Tourliner” is the commercial name; what matters when sourcing parts is the type code.

The type code and chassis number appear on the vehicle data plate. It usually sits in the driver’s door frame, on a body panel near the front axle, or in the driver’s area. The chassis number is also on the registration document and runs to 17 characters.

The chassis number is the most certain way to confirm build year and specification level. If you cannot recall the year, simply send it.

The number on the part is the most reliable description

Most parts carry a number: moulded in, printed on a label or laser-etched. That number is the most accurate description there is — more reliable even than model and year.

Where to look depends on the part. On headlamp and tail lamp groups the number is usually on the back of the housing beside the connector outlet. On mirror housings it sits behind the mirror glass or on the inner face of the housing. On door cylinders it is stamped into the cylinder body; on valves it is on the flat face of the casting.

If dirt is hiding the number, use soapy water and a brush rather than thinner — aggressive solvents can erase a label completely.

Which side is “right”?

This is the classic ordering error. In the parts trade the side is always given from the driver’s seat, looking forward.

So the driver’s right hand points to “right” and the left hand to “left”. Looking at the vehicle head-on from outside reverses the sides — which is exactly why “the right one as you look at it” causes confusion.

If you are unsure, describe the position rather than the side: “the side with the passenger door” or “the side with the driver’s door” is never misread.

No number? Then describe by measurement

Where a part carries no legible number, measurements take over. Three figures usually narrow it to one item:

  • The centre-to-centre spacing of the mounting holes — the single most distinguishing measurement.
  • The overall length and width of the part, and its thickness where relevant.
  • On electrical parts, the number of pins in the connector and its shape.
  • On hose and pipe connections, the internal diameter and the thread size.

How to photograph it

A photograph is the fastest description there is, but it takes three frames: the part in place before removal, the back of it once removed, and a close-up of the number if there is one.

Put a tape measure or a familiar object alongside for scale. Size is easily misjudged in a photograph.

The frame taken before removal is the valuable one: it shows the fitted orientation, which direction the cable comes from and how the part relates to its neighbours. That single image resolves most left-and-right confusion by itself.

Using the OEM number to find aftermarket

The original number helps when sourcing aftermarket too. Aftermarket manufacturers use their own numbers, but their catalogues are cross-referenced against the originals.

So even when you specifically want an aftermarket part, quoting the original number is the right move. Matching on a number produces far fewer errors than an estimate based on model and year.

Because models receive facelifts and specification changes during their production run. Headlamp shape, bumper contour, connector type and mirror housing can all change without the model name changing. The model name alone is therefore not enough — the build year or chassis number belongs with it.
