Setra Spare Parts Guide: Series Differences and the Parts That Wear Out First

Identify your series first

A Setra model code carries two pieces of information: the digits give the series, the letters give the body type. In S 415 HD the “4” is the series, “15” is roughly the length and “HD” means High Decker. HDH is the super-high-roof TopClass body; GT-HD is the ComfortClass. Codes ending in DT — S 431 DT and S 531 DT — are double-deckers.

A practical rule: the 300 series are 1990s coaches and still common in the Turkish second-hand fleet. The 400 series ran from 1996 into the early 2010s. The 500 series is the current generation. The model code appears on the type approval line of the registration document, and on the manufacturer plate below the front panel.

What actually changes between series

These are the differences that decide whether a part fits:

• Headlamp recess: the body line differs between the 400 and 500 series, so the lamp housings are not interchangeable.
• Front bumper: on the 500 series the lower line manages airflow, so fog lamp and grille apertures sit elsewhere.
• Tail lamps: bulb clusters on the 400 series, one-piece LED modules on the 500. When one diode fails the whole module is replaced.
• Windscreen: the 500 series uses a single panoramic glass with a noticeably different curvature.
• Mirror arm mounting: the foot that bolts to the body is different, even where the arm looks identical.

The parts that move fastest

From our own counter records, demand runs in this order: exterior mirror head and mirror glass, headlamp, door cylinder, luggage door hinge and gas strut, front bumper corner, glazing rubber.

Mirrors lead because they are the most exposed part during terminal manoeuvres. The detail worth knowing: the impact usually bends the foot where the arm meets the body rather than the mirror itself. If the mirror vibrates, changing the glass will not fix it.

Door cylinders come second. When a door slows, the valve is usually blamed first — but in most cases it is the seal inside the cylinder that has tired. System pressure reads normal while the cylinder never gets full force.

What to tell us when you order

Give us these three and we will get the part right first time:

• The model code — S 415 HD, S 416 HDH, S 431 DT and so on.
• The model year — there are year-based revisions within a series.
• A photo of the part you have — for headlamps, mirrors and hinges this is the fastest confirmation there is.

OEM or aftermarket?

On visible surface parts — headlamp lenses, mirror housings, bumpers — aftermarket quality has risen sharply and the price difference is significant. On the pneumatic group, however, OEM works out cheaper over time: aftermarket door cylinders have a noticeably shorter seal life.

A useful test: ask whether a failure of that part would strand passengers. Where it would, buy OEM; where it would not, aftermarket is usually the right balance.
