Switching a Bus to LED Lighting: The Real Cost and Payback

LED lamp prices sit well above their bulb equivalents, and that keeps most operators from switching. But the real cost in lighting is not the lamp itself — it is the labour to change it and the time the vehicle spends off the road. Frame the calculation that way and the picture changes.
How much longer do they last?
A quality LED marker or indicator lamp lasts many times longer than its bulb equivalent. In bulb lamps the filament fatigues under vibration; on a coach under constant shaking, that means falling short even of the catalogue life.
An LED has no filament and is far more resistant to vibration. In practice, in marker and interior lighting groups, one LED stays in place across several bulb lifetimes.
The saving is in the labour
Replacing a marker lamp is trivial in parts cost; the real cost is the vehicle not running and the fitter’s time. Repeated several times a year across a fleet, that reaches a serious figure.
The difference is starker in ceiling LED strips: with older fluorescent interior lighting, ballast failures and broken tubes are a regular maintenance line. On vehicles converted to LED strip, that line largely disappears.
The second gain is battery load. On vehicles where interior lighting runs for long periods with the engine off, the low consumption of LEDs relieves the battery noticeably.
What to watch when converting
- Confirm the voltage. Buses generally run 24V; fitting a 12V LED destroys it instantly. Always state the voltage when ordering.
- Avoid cheap LEDs. Units with a weak driver circuit die on voltage fluctuation and give shorter life than a bulb. This is the most common reason operators sour on LEDs.
- Watch flasher compatibility on indicators. Because LEDs draw so little current, some vehicles hyper-flash; an LED-compatible flasher or a load resistor is required.
- Mind the regulations on headlamps. If converting the headlamp group, use E-marked, type-approved products or you will have problems at inspection.
