Choosing Bus Engine Oil: 15W-40, 10W-40 or 5W-30?

Choosing engine oil for a coach comes down to two questions: which viscosity and which approval. Most operators check the first and skip the second — and that is where the expensive mistake lives. The wrong approval does not wreck the engine straight away; it blocks the particulate filter within a few thousand kilometres, and that bill dwarfs the price of the oil.
What viscosity tells you
In 15W-40 the “15W” describes cold flow and the “40” describes thickness at operating temperature; the W stands for winter. The lower the cold number, the faster the oil circulates on start-up — which is exactly when most wear happens.
For most operating conditions 15W-40 still covers a wide range. But on city work with many cold starts a day, 10W-40 makes a measurable difference.
The approval is what matters
Viscosity describes how the oil flows; the approval describes what is in it. Roughly:
- Euro 3 and older: classic 15W-40 mineral oil — ACEA E7, MAN M 3275-1, MB 228.3.
- Euro 4–5 on extended drains: 10W-40 synthetic — ACEA E4/E7, MAN M 3277, MB 228.5.
- Euro 6 with DPF and SCR: low-SAPS only — ACEA E6/E9, MAN M 3477 or M 3677, MB 228.51.
- CNG city buses: additionally require MAN M 3271-1.
Why low-SAPS is not optional
Low-SAPS oil has reduced sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur. Those three accumulate in the pores of the particulate filter, and regeneration cannot burn them out. Putting ordinary oil in a Euro 6 coach slowly turns the filter into a brick.
You see it as falling power, rising fuel consumption and regeneration warnings appearing more and more often. Replacing a blocked filter costs far more than the lifetime price difference of running the correct oil.
Who sets the drain interval
Operating conditions set it, not the oil. A manufacturer may quote 60,000–90,000 km on a long-drain oil, but that assumes steady motorway running. City stop-start, dusty routes, long idling and short legs all shorten it substantially.
If you run a fleet, oil analysis is the honest answer. A simple test for soot, fuel dilution and viscosity loss puts the interval on measurement rather than guesswork.
Three mistakes we see most
Across the counter, these come up again and again:
- Matching viscosity only. “I bought 10W-40” is not enough — check which approval it carries.
- Mixing approvals. Topping up with whatever is on the shelf destroys the low-SAPS property of the oil already in the sump.
- Skipping the oil filter. New oil through an old filter is contaminated within the first few hundred kilometres.
