Two things decide a coach engine oil: the viscosity grade and the approval the engine actually demands. Euro 3 and older engines run happily on classic 15W-40 mineral oil (ACEA E7, MAN M 3275-1, MB 228.3). Euro 4–5 fleets on extended drain intervals move to 10W-40 synthetic (ACEA E4/E7, MAN M 3277, MB 228.5). Euro 6 coaches with DPF and SCR must have low-SAPS oil: ACEA E6/E9, MAN M 3477 or M 3677, MB 228.51 — the wrong oil blocks the particulate filter and the bill dwarfs the price of the oil.
