Side indicators sit flush in the bodywork with a thin seal around them. When the seal hardens, water enters the lamp, the socket corrodes green and the lamp loses contact. Often the lamp is fine and only the socket has failed — check before replacing.
The LED version lasts longer than the bulb type and has a one-piece moulded body, so its risk of water ingress is lower.
