Setra runs an air-suspended chassis, so the damper carries no load — it damps the bellows. A worn damper therefore shows up not as a loss of ride height but as the rear axle bouncing two or three times over a bump. Passengers usually complain about comfort first.
Dampers are replaced in pairs per axle. Renewing one side leaves the damping uneven and the coach leans slightly under braking. Renew the top and bottom bushes at the same time; aged bushes shorten the life of a new damper.
