Cracked Bus Windscreen: Replace Now or Can It Wait?

A coach windscreen is laminated: a clear interlayer is pressed between two sheets of glass. That is why it does not shatter when a stone strikes it — it stays where it is. But “does not shatter” is not the same as “can wait”. The crack lengthens with driving vibration, and past a certain point the job stops being just a glass replacement.
What each type of damage means
Star or point impact: a coin-sized mark where the stone hit. If it is near the edge and outside the swept area, it can be watched for a while. Because a temperature difference can turn it into a crack quickly, do not aim the heater outlet straight at it in winter.
Line crack: a single lengthening line. This one will progress; the question is not whether but how fast.
Crack reaching the edge: the critical case. The edge of the glass carries structural load, and once the crack reaches the sealing channel the glass no longer contributes to the body.
When waiting is the wrong call
In these three cases waiting increases the cost:
- The crack has entered the swept area — a defect at inspection, and at night it scatters oncoming headlights.
- The crack is within 5 cm of the glass edge — reaching the channel is only a matter of time.
- Two separate cracks are running towards each other — the moment they join, the glass starts moving in sections.
The real issue in replacement is the seal
What determines the quality of a windscreen replacement is not the glass but the seal. A new screen fitted into an old seal starts letting water in within months, because the seal has hardened in the channel and taken the shape of the old glass.
Replace the seal continuously around the edge, not in sections. A repair at a joint lasts a few months, and the joint becomes a new leak path.
After replacement, check all four corners individually with a pressure washer at the first wash. A leak shows itself in the wash bay, not in the rain.
What to specify when ordering
Coach windscreens are made to a type code. Between two series of the same marque the curvature radius can differ noticeably — Setra’s 400 versus 500 series is a good example. Do not order glass without the type code and the build year.
If you run heated glass, say so: a screen with heating elements and a plain one look almost identical from outside but differ in price and connection.
Order the seal with the glass, plus glazing tape and corner blocks if needed. An extra day off the road waiting for a small item usually costs more than the item itself.
