Pre-Winter Bus Checklist: 12 Points of Preparation
7 minute read · ·BAYKOÇ Technical Team

Most faults that appear in winter were already developing in summer; the cold merely makes them visible. Half a day of checks in October or November prevents a breakdown in January. The list below is drawn from the parts most requested at our counter before winter.
Vision and lighting
- Replace wiper blades. A blade hardened by summer sun will smear on the first rain. This is the cheapest, highest-return replacement before winter.
- Check washer jets and reservoir, and fill with antifreeze washer fluid. Plain water freezes and destroys the pump.
- Switch on and check every lamp group. If a headlamp shows condensation or standing water, resolve it before winter — trapped moisture freezes and destroys the reflector faster.
- Test mirror heating. An unheated mirror gives no view once it fogs.
Heating and ventilation
- Run the heating circuit and confirm it warms every zone. If one zone is weak, deal with it now.
- Open the heater tap. Left closed since summer is a very common finding.
- Test every fan speed. If only the top speed works, the resistor pack has failed.
- Replace the cabin or pollen filter. A blocked filter makes a sound system look inadequate.
Air system and doors
- Drain the air reservoir and put regular draining on the schedule. Water in the tank freezes and locks the door and brake lines.
- Check the door weatherstrips. A hardened strip stiffens further in cold; the door does not seal, heat escapes and door faults follow.
- Clean and grease the door rails with a suitable lubricant. Too much grease attracts dust and makes things worse.
- Inspect the step rubbers. Worn step matting in wet or icy weather is a direct accident risk.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should bus winter maintenance be done?
October to November is ideal. Checks done before the first cold snap significantly reduce the risk of being off the road in January and February.
Which bus part fails most often in winter?
Wiper blades, heater cores and fan resistor packs, and the pneumatic door system. Water freezing in the air reservoir is the most common cause of winter door faults.
How often should the air reservoir be drained?
At least weekly in winter, and more often in humid conditions. Water in the tank can freeze and lock the door and brake lines.
